Finely finished paintings add to your home the finishing flourish. Whilst it may be tempting to do your own decoration, a good professional can not only take your work out but also create a professional routine that is difficult for you to suit. This is twice the case with external wall painting, which often demands the safe preparation of specialist scaffoldings or platforms. But how do you consider the companies that will value you and your home?

Every trader who says they can start working the next day should be carefully employed as there are genuine cancellations from time to time. Likewise, it is easier to avoid painters and decorators who sell cash or use other high-pressure methods.

Ask the potential client if they are using subcontractors. Professional organizations do not usually have subcontractors so you need to know if the people doing the job will be standardized.

Great painters never give you a quote or consent to work without visiting the property beforehand. Call or email three traders with a short description of what you seek and rough measurements. We are the experts and will guide you about the best choices after you have learned your home and thought about your budget and expectations.

Ask a decorator if it could create a better or longer finish than a slightly more costly solution, like high-quality paint. The original outlay could be marginally higher, but the value for capital will be increased.

Use quotes even in prose. These are generally correct, but the removal of wallpapers may be an exception. Most traders will send you a quote on the assumption that the wallpaper has one layer and that the walls below are sound. You can fairly charge more if you want to remove more layers or make repairs to the walls.

Once you commit to any job, make sure that there are no hidden expenses, such as parking or job at weekends.

When the work is finished and approved, most works of painting and decoration are paid for. Your decorator may request an installment in advance for large jobs, such as those that take more than two days. Costly or exclusive products may also be billed in developments, for example specially blended paints.

When the job is over, look everything carefully and deal with snacks before payment is made or completed.
